Review of Sexing The Transman Documentary March 17, 2012
Buck Angel is a saviour to trans men everywhere.
I remember the first time I got my hands on a gay porno (it was one of those cut down softcore jobs) and the feeling of ‘Oh, there are people out there like me!’ Let’s face it, there’s never been a lack of gay porn out there.
Until Buck, there was no sexually open, masculine, vag-proud trans guys to watch. I can only imagine the release that guys must have felt when Buck hit the small screen.
In Sexing the Transman, Buck interviews a heap of trans guys and girls who have been out with trans guys (including the fabulous Margaret Cho) to discuss their experiences, their desires, their pains, their holes - pretty much everything.
The doco is very candid and very explicit (the MQFF team had to negotiate to get it through the classification board even with an unclassified rating); it is also moving, loving and very sexy.
I liked the demystifying role of the film - I certainly got a lot out of it on that level - but what I like more is that that’s not really why the film was made. This is a film by trans guys for trans guys. I am glad I got to see it (thanks MQFF for taking up that fight) but more than that, I am glad the film is out there and these guys are getting a voice.

I am a pansexual woman deeply in love with and married to a transguy and we are both excited to see your documentary. How is it being distributed? Are there any planned showings in the SF Bay Area? I feel like the info is probably posted somewhere (like maybe in front of my face) but I’m just not finding it.

Thank you so much. As of now I only have the XXX version released but working on the more “mainstream” now. I have so many damn good interviews that is is very hard to edit. But I just screened a special cut I did for the Copenhagen film festival and that went really well. So that was a great test. They loved it.
